Waiting on the Big News...

Did Spurs get the deal for van der Vaart done in time?  Reports from Spain say "yes" but there hasn't been any confirmation.  If he did, there will be all sorts of "fantasy football" implications...(if you didn't get that one, see the picture of his better half).

If Spurs do get their man, it will make for some interesting selection dilemmas once everyone is healthy at the Lane.  VDV will presumably start and you have to play Bale and Lennon/Bentley and then a holding midfielder (presumably Palacios on most days).  That would leave Modric, Kranjcar, Jenas, THud, and the other of Lennon/Bentley stewing on the bench and playing cup matches that you know they think are beneath them.  Not to mention Jamie O'Hara and Danny Rose who may not even make the bench for said cup matches at this point.

their strikers are rubbish, they'll play 4-5-1. get the most out of vdv, mod and bale that way

  2. Gomes

    Corluka King Dawson BAE

    Palacios

    VDV Modric

    Lennon Bale

    Defoe

    What do you think, possible?

  3. I think this move was mainly for depth. Sandro has arrived at WHL also, backup for Palacios.
I do NOT see Harry leaving Modric out of the lineup as he is a big fan of Modric. HOWEVER, look at Bale/Modric/Lennon...a very injury-prone bunch of midfielders so its just a matter of time until a long term injury happens.

I could see Bale drift back as LB and open LM for Modric so VdV could move in middle. But again I think this move is worse than Pool getting more MF since Spur already has a lot MF and FW/ST while Pool has always low on FW/ST. Definitely an adding more depth move as Arry has been saying how important it is to have depth for both EPL and CPL. However I foresee some complains that could lead to some players leaving them in the winter due to the lack of regular football, Arry always plays favorites after all.

  5. Rukkie, that would be the worst thing that Spurs could do. It would be the end of Tottenham's attacks since Bale has been their best attacking option up front. I'd say 'Arry should go with a 4-5-1 formation, with VDV right behind Defoe...a la Liverpool style.

  7. Spurs should line up as
    Gomes
    Corluka Dawson Gallas/King BAE
    Lennon Thud Modric Bale
    VDV
    Pav
I think Huntelaar would have been perfect upfront if that had of happened. King should start when healthy but thats pretty rare. Championship clubs and below can still loan players so I wouldn't be suprised to see Jenas/Rose go out and maybe even Bentley or Keane.

  8. Pav as the first choice striker? really? I would pick Defoe, Crouch, Keane before Pav.

I don't think Tottenham can afford to loan out Keane again, all they would have is Defoe, Crouch & Pav if that happened.

I think Spurs needed another striker and another solid defender, certainly not another midfielder. While Bale has been amazing playing as a left winger, they may NEED to have him play LB the way Assou-Ekotto is playing.

  9. I wasn't one of the people who thought Spurs needed ANOTHER striker. Defoe/Pav/Crouch/Keane SHOULD get the job done.
Again, It gives Harry OPTIONS. loads of options he can use based on the team he is playing against.
Spurs are in CL. If the players complain that they are not playing enough then they should work harder to EARN the playing time.
Least we got a few weeks to settle on this transfer deadline and of course, injuries....I'm sure there will be a few!

To Saul: Best attacking option doesnt mean the best method to pick.

He is on form, no doubt, but he was in form as a LB before he moved up the field for the LM. Not to mention even though he is good, Spur is having the other wing, Lennon who is very good and cant just simply leaving modric/kranjar/vdv(if he comes). Bale as attacking fullback is great, and its open up an option in attacking instead of just relying on Bale as a left winger and a crappy BAE in both defense and attacking while wasting some attacking talent on the bench. Dropping Bale from LM to LB doesnt mean end Spur attacking option, to me it means they have another option for their attacking since they have such a versatile player to either create miracle on himself or accomodate and work with another attacking talent on that left wing. trust me, Bale will not produce all the time in reality ( not fantasy) in both EPL and CPL, otherwise they wouldnt lose the last game would they?

4-5-1: yes 4-5-1 is a way to say it, but Liverpool is playing as 4-2-3-1 with 2 holding MF ( or something with Gerrard as the central midfield who is similar to holding midfield but have a bit of freedom to move up, like Xabi before). If Spur plays this with Mordic and VdV i just cant see it works, because both Modric and VdV are attacking midfield, their defense is nowhere near those who is specialized in it, and probably worse than Lucas, and they will just be like Lampard and Gerrard when they play together for England ( or Sneijder and VdV for Holland). I reckon Spur will play with 4-5-1 eventually, but there might be modification. Interesting if this deal falls through to see regardless.

  11. Rukkie - I see your point and maybe that's what Rednapp needs to do to balance his team. Although I don't really see BAE as a crappy defender, everyone has one off game but he'll get the job done.

4-2-3-1 formation sounds just about right...

    Gomes
    Corluka-King-Dawson-BAE
    Palacios-THudd
    Lennon-VDV-Modric or Krankjar
    Defoe

It won't matter where VDV plays on the field, if Yahoo doesn't get him in the game. Didn't expect him on Day 1, but please let's have him for the weekend?

  16. Agree with Rukkie on Bale.

As much as we're all going to kick and scream about it as fantasy managers, Bale's probably moving back. Yes, he's been their brightest spot in the midfield. Yes, he's been a fantasy stud. But he's always been a LB as a professional, and it's not like moving him back will completely disallow him to use his attacking ability. He can still push forward. Last game, Redknapp's adjustment to the team was to move Bale to LB. That should say it all right there.

  17. Plus, think of it this way. If his product drops on account of moving back. That's a lot of new cap space to play with should someone decide to sell.

@Nick and Rukkie: Spot on to the both of you. I think the only real threat to Bale's points is losing set pieces to VDV, even as a LB Bale was still bombing forward and putting in cross after cross. We may see a reduction in the possible goals he could score, but for the most part he is a fantasy stud and should continue to be even back in defense.

Plus hopefully VDV will be added in soon before he plays a match so he'll be around 5.6mil. And if he starts taking kicks he could be a very useful mid.

The best XI spurs can field:

    Gomes
    Kabul Daws King Bale
    Lennon/Bentley THud Sandro Modric
    VDV
    Defoe/Crouch/Pav

Palacios is WAY off his game compared to the past, BAE plays alot better than most give credit for. Keane is a whiny flapper, second tier, and a distraction...he needs to go...so does Pav for that matter, decent skills horrible attitude.

Modric has also shown that he can be an effective DM presence when needed (he did play CM next to THUD in some crucial fixtures late last campaign).
