Manchester City sign James Milner with Stephen Ireland going the other way to Aston Villa - Manchester City FC

Manchester City have today completed the signing of James Milner from Aston Villa.

Milner completes his move from the West Midland club in time to be available for a debut in front of the City fans for Monday evening’s eagerly anticipated game against Liverpool. He will not be able to feature in tomorrow evening’s Europa League game with Timisoara...

Going the other way, Stephen Ireland has also completed his transfer from City to Villa. Ireland spent eight years at City, having come through the ranks as a teenager. He made 142 starts in that time, scoring 23 goals. His best season in a City shirt came in 2008/09, when he was named as the Club’s Player of the Year.

Both transfers were completed this afternoon, with Milner taking up the squad number seven following Ireland’s departure. City manager Roberto Mancini was delighted to finally seal the capture of Milner.

  1. Perfect timing!!! Just when I thought I didn't like my options to replace Nasri, Steven(Ireland) has given.

  2. milner is just gone as a fantasy pick with the depth of man city, why are they still picking wider players, they need a central mid, that can bring the ball from defense, pass up front, join in the attack and get goals/ assists? gourcuff, cesc, diego, schneijder, ozil-type players. if robinho and petrov could not get a game, how is milner? he is just getting city with more, local players, so that they don't run afoul of the new rule.

  3. Did you watch Milner last season at all Greginho?

I seem to remember Milner doing quite well whilst bringing the ball from defense, passing up front, joining in the attack and getting goals / assists.

Although i agree that he is now worthless to us all, as alot of his points used to come from his set piece duty, and we will never know when he's going to actually start.

    Goodbye James Milner!

  4. I am very glad for Ireland. I've always liked him, and I will enjoy giving him actual consideration for my fantasy team this season.

The opposite for Milner, another guy for whom I have an affinity. I think his England hopes are done too. With the wealth of midfield talent the Three Lions have, how is a guy who will start twenty games (if he's lucky) garner serious consideration?

  5. If Ireland is set to start, he looks a good pick IMO. Not only trying to impress for his new team, but playing on his birthday - surely he will score a goal!

  6. yes mike B, i watched milner last season, and i had him lots of times, especially double games. being an arsenal fan i would rather watch tottenham, everton, and villa than manure, chelsea, liverpool. he is not central, though, which is my point, he may do many of those things, that i said city need from a central middie, but so does, silva, but he is on the left.

  7. Sorry mate but it's Manchester United and not 'manure' as you call it. Surely you would not like it if we Manchester United fans gave your team a shitty nickname, lets just be professional and considerate of all others please.

  8. go ahead saul and call arsenal whatever nickname you want. it won't bother me. you have to remember, that these are some of the richest teams in the world and whatever nickname befalls them does not matter. they don't care about you and i. we don't go to games, we don't buy jerseys every year, we don't belong to the season ticket club.
