OK, on to my weekly rant. I want to know what has become of the wide midfielder at the top of the table. It used to be that the prevailing wisdom was that any Best XI would be made up entirely of players from the Big Four. Now? I'd argue that there are better wingers playing out of position or sitting on the bench at clubs outside of the "Big Four" than any starting for ANY of those clubs. Crazy? Let's see...
Best of the Big Four...I guess you'd have to give it to the ManYoo duo of Giggs and Valencia over anyone from Arsenal (who don't really have any actual wingers), Chelsea (who have FloMal which means that they really don't have any actual wingers), and Liverpool (who have the next best of the bunch in Benayoun but nothing after that and his health has been sporadic). And what of Giggs and Valencia? Well, sadly Giggs is clearly the best player of this group and he can only play about half of ManYoo's matches for fear of them losing him to injury. Valencia has been as maddeningly inconsistent for ManYoo as he was for Wigan. At Wigan he was a bit better than expected but that doesn't really cut it at ManYoo.
Best of the Rest...At Villa they're finding ways to use three wingers in their formation (Milner, BFAY, and Downing); at Citeh they're doing the same with MPet, SWP, and Barry; and at Spurs they have Kranjcar, Lennon, Modric, Jenas, Bentley, and are so deep that O'Hara had to be shipped off to get some playing time. Outside of those clubs you could look at Hunt, MTay, Duff, Pienaar, Bily, and Arteta coming back eventually and he will likely find himself moved into the middle. A level or two down the pecking order you find guys like Eagles, Eth, Larsson, and the formerly really good MGP.
So, what to make of this? Have the big guys gone to some post-modern system where wingers are obsolete? Do the big guys just not have the money to pluck really good players from the next tier down? Does the fact that target strikers - Drogba aside - are absent from the Big Four mean that the classic winger isn't really worth the money? Do wing defenders (Sagna, Clichy, ACole, Bosingwa, Evra, Rafael, Insua, and GJohn) take the classic wing role from midfielders and render the "wide" midfielders into the spaces between the touchline and that occupied by the central players? I can't say I have answers but this season has made it incredibly clear that there is a stark difference in thinking about the value of wingers between Chelsea and Arsenal especially and the rest of the league (I'm not sure if Liverpool and ManYoo share the Chelsea/Arsenal philosophy or if they've just chosen very poorly where to spend their money on wingers and therefore have mediocre options outside of the ancient Giggs).
OK, on to the upcoming week...
The big thing to make sure you remember for the upcoming week (other than that Arsenal are top of the table) is that Citeh and Stoke are off this weekend. For those who kept Tevez and/or Given for last weekend in hopes of only losing one weekend's points in return for keeping two hot players for below market prices...OUCH. With a crappy week from both players one week of nothing became two very quickly.
As far as the schedules go for those who are actually playing...
- ManYoo get Hull at OT in what SHOULD be a blow out (but all bets are off on ManYoo right now so take it with a grain of salt);
- Liverpool travel to Wolves in another match-up that should shape up to be a blowout but again, who knows what to expect from Pool;
- Chelsea plays a tough one with Birmingham and I guess we get to see if Brum really has the chops to play with the big boys;
- Suddenly better-than-average Everton are hosting suddenly-horrible Sunderland;
- Rovers (who gave up 6 today and lost Samba to a Red Card) host equally unpredictable Wigan;
- Bolton hosts Burnley in what we should expect will be a much needed first win for Owen Coyle; and
- Spurs/Fulham; Villa/Arsenal; and Pompey/WHU look fairly evenly matched when considering talent, form, and location of the match.
Forwards
- Anelka (but hopefully you bought him before his price went up last weekend);
- Donovan (his price is still low but climbing);
- Saha (quietly solid this season);
- Kuyt (but only if you got him before his price went up after his brace today);
- Diamanti (price to production ratio is very solid and Pompey is spiraling back downward);
- Rooney (seems like a perfect weekend to have him but that's usually when he pulls the rug out from under fantasy managers); and
- Klasnic (I really liked what I saw in the Sunday match against Arsenal - he could have had a couple of goals and Burnley aren't exactly top of the table - think I'm enjoying being able to say that)
- Valencia (seems to be in a reasonable vein of form);
- Fab4 (pricey but worth the money when he's healthy);
- MTay (didn't look great vs. Arsenal but STILL went for 23 across the two matches);
- Eagles (I'm enjoying that the most consistently productive winger from the ManYoo system plays for Burnley - see rant above);
- Bily (price isn't that bad and the match-up is a nice one);
- Lee (would be nice if his play on the right side of Bolton's midfield had translated into more points on Sunday);
- McCarthy (price is right if you want to see if his game-winning performance last weekend was a fluke or something real - Rovers don't seem like a bad choice if you're going to bet on "real"); and
- Aquilani (wasn't bad today and would have featured more last weekend if not for going 120 minutes last midweek - oh yeah, still cheap);
- Verm (evergreen);
- Bale (match-up isn't great but he's money until BAE gets back);
- Ivanovic (if you're spending, option 1);
- Wes Brown (if you're spending, option 2);
- SeaBass (hard to imagine that King will start two in 6 days);
- Degen (inexpensive "buy-in" in the Liverpool defence);
- Givet (all hands on deck with Samba suspended);
- Steinsson (I'm betting on him to rebound after a rough go against Arsenal); and
- GNev (but it's a heck of a risk with a reasonable percent chance of Rafael starting instead);
- EvdS (if you got him before his price went WAY up);
- Pepe (why not? they're playing between 6 and 8 defenders, how would anyone score on them?);
- T-Ho (price is down which is nice but not THAT low); and
- Jussi (he's cheap and needs to get a CS one of these weeks doesn't he?
Cheers - Neal
i torn in my selection this weekend..
ReplyDeletenice to have Elk but the match-up is..mmm not so favourable..
torn btw having valencia or not, my middies are
DDunn, Aquaman, Jcollison, LModric
want to change to 5 middies but my FWD seem good
HRod, Diamanti, Kalinic (score 2 in CCup)
mmm..

Why did I get Rooney instead of Fabregas?! Blasphemy!
ReplyDeleteI thought of BD-ing Fab, but I doubt he can pull of another of his masterclass display at Villa Park. He's definitely a top contender for this season's Best Player of the Year. Went with Lamps instead.
Aquilani vs Wolves anyone? Or will Rafa bench him again with Maxi in his place?
Hey Neal.
ReplyDeleteNo Jonny Evans?
Also - no Lampard? Thinking it's good to hold onto him at discount with a double week ahead.
Rooney is a tough one. He ties up so many millions and yet if I missed a brace / hat-trick and 30 point week against Hull I would be gutted, as everyone else has him!
@Merv - Aqua has to be worth a shot at 3.xx
mbrown from portsmouth is a better bet for fillers. i know he is not loved on this blog, but he starts everyday except for his 2 game supsension. people are reluctant to pick up portsmouth players but their are/were some fantasy producers on that team. ohara and boetang.
ReplyDeletembasil
you are holding anelka, not for this week, but for next one, just like i am.
I don't think Billy starts if Osman is fit
ReplyDeletePaphos Toffee
for me, fab4 has attained unsellable status. matchup, schmatchup. unless he gets hurt, he stays in the squad. and since he's only tying up 17.5 (inexplicably), it's not exactly a crippling expenditure.
ReplyDeletejoon
ReplyDeletei agree. i am an arsenal fan and have had cesc more than any other midfielder this year, but i haven't been picking most of the rest of the team, except for vermaelen, whom i have had since week 1, like everybody else, because of the rotation, injuries etc. big players play and perform in big games. you just don't worry about the matchup, they will find a way. it is the fringe players that you pick on favorable matchups. so out goes diaby and eduardo, in comes donovan and nzogbia. cesc was doing great, the premier midfielder, then van persie went down, they lost at sunderland and at home to chelsea. the team had to readjust and find how to play differently. now they are set and rosicky's introduction is going to make cesc and his own fantasy values production go up.
@Paphos - maybe Landon makes way for Osman instead? Although I think Osman was played in the middle with Fellaini against Arsenal. I think Pienaar started on the left in place of Bily in that match, then Pienaar was in the middle against Citeh. Hard one to predict, but seems Lando is getting a nice run of starts, and doing well. Seems Bily and Osman are the most risk to sit the bench?
ReplyDelete@Joon,greginho - definitely agree with premium players like Fab, matchups don't really matter. the only thing is it's not just one week of tough matchup, arsenal have @AST, MAN, @CHE, LIV so I guess that's something to consider. Wouldn't really think of giving him up @17.50, but sometimes might need to spend elsewhere.
Any news on Vidic's health for this weekend? I'd like to have a United defender, but aside from Evra have no clue who will play. Any help would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteany chance maxrod will be in the system by this weekend...
ReplyDeleteI think the MOST annoying thing for this week's games is that they are played Tuesday/Wednesday (sans Man U/Hull) and MOST teams play on the weekend for their FA cup games.
ReplyDeleteSo....teams news will be weak. Possible injuries this weekend might curtail the week's pick.
We're all in the same boat, but still.
- About Vidic, He was a MAYBE for the City game and never featured, so I'd go with a MAYBE for Hull. But wait till Friday when THAT team news should be updated.
@Anon8.41: Nope
ReplyDelete@greginho: But i surely get Drogs if Ivory Cost knocked out of ACN (a theory)..hehehe
No offense , but Fabs isn't world class ? The commentator must be joking . The biggest trait that made him the world class is his passion and desire to win . Add in his creative playmaking , improved finishing and getting tougher this season , not world class yet ? But definitely one of the best .
ReplyDeleteAnd his solo run against Tottenham ...
world class mean you win big tournemant with your teams aka Messi, CRon, RonalDinho, Zidane...etc.
ReplyDeleteOk, hows this?
ReplyDeleteVan der sar
Verm, Bale, Evans
Modric, Aqualini, Valencia, Bily
Rooney, Klasnic, Donovon
I still have 6.5 left here... who should I upgrade and suggestions for upgrades. Thanks!
Tony.
@Bean - exactly right - Ossie or Billy are the main contenders for the bench - I guess it depends if Moyes decides to change a winning team or not. All the same I don't fancy putting nearly 10 mil into Billy and gambling that he does start.
ReplyDeletePaphos Toffee
@Paphos - good point about changing a winning team, they did just beat citeh, why change? with the FA Cup matches before the gameweek it makes team selections all that more difficult
ReplyDeleteGuys, will Giggs play? I haven't seen him on anyones team. thanks
ReplyDeleteIf I've learned anything it's that when I have a funny feeling about a player I need to go with it. I dropped Cesc before his price dropped for no reason and then skyrocketed. Fantasy logic tells me this was stupid but I have a strong feeling that @ Villa he'll have one of his 4 or 5 point games. Just a hunch but, again, I'm learning to go with them. If I'm right his price will drop and make it easier to buy back in.
ReplyDeleteAlong these same lines I've dropped Valencia. I'll add him back if it looks like Giggs won't play but I just have a feeling that Val will find a way to be lost in the points spree against Hull, as he has during other landslide victories this season.
And at face value, Pienaar looks way over-priced but I'm shelling out for him this week. In fact, I have three Toffees, with Donovan and Heitinga. Sunderland looked like a league 1 side over the weekend and I see no reason for this to change. Why Pienaar over saving money and going for Bily? The Citeh game spooked me. I'm sure he'll start and I'm sure he'll play well but I'm all about the 100% sure thing right now.
OK, I'm done.

ReplyDeleteWorld Class players will appear here.
http://www.castrolfootball.com/rankings/rankings/?position=2&nation=&team=&comp=#label
castrol ranking(which uses Opta stats) will tell you that diaby is a bit above Fab.
Fab4 isn't a world class player as he hadn't really been the "leading" player, be it scoring or assists[07/08 he top the assist table, guess who top the more important scoring board]. CR7 did it and become world class. And looking for a defining moment, it drew a blank. Zizou had it, Fat Ron had it, Gerrard had it(media think he is one, i think not), Torres had it, Messi had it. Where's Cesc's moment?
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,15964_2705370,00.html
Out pass by Mascherano and even lucas(amount and accuracy), not the 'Most Dribbles & Runs' player, not 'Most Crosses' player either. not the top tackler. he can only find the assist table/scoring board his way to the top. but he's got to be wary of world-class Lamppost.the last world class player from arsenal was TH14.Stats don't lie. till then, he is worldclass - not.
~Newbie
Any interest in Cech for 3 clean sheet opportunities in 2 weeks? And at a price of 10+?
ReplyDeletewhy some people so down on cesc. is it because he is the only midfielder, in the premier league, playing great, right now? the other guys that finished in the top 5 for different player of the year awards, are not performing to their normal standards. this is his first year of dominating football. he is just starting his career so he can't have won all of the things people say he needs to be "world class". he is 22 years old. frank lampard has had 9 more years, stevie g has 7 more years, ronaldinho gaucho has 7 more years, torres has 3 more years, rooney 2 has more years, christiano has 2 more years than cesc fabregas, so give him a chance to get a few years older and you can then judge. messi is the same age, but he didn't personally win anything for barcelona, until last year and he doesn't add much to the national team. in the last year, cesc took iniesta's starting spot. he and david villa were responsible for the last 5 wins for the spanish team, they had most of the goals. torres isn't dangerous for the national team, right now. zidane didn't win anything important until he was 28. ronaldinho gaucho was 25 when he won the champions league. henry didn't win a chamions league title until he was in his 30's. lampard has only league titles, gerrard no league titles, rooney wasn't the reason that manure won titles that was cristiano ronaldo. christiano is definitely world class for club, but not country, he also wasn't a team player. he held manure back for 3 years before he learned how to pass. there is not much else to say. it seems so odd that people are using some bizarre rankings to claim he is not world class. who, in the premier league, right now, would people want to watch play. there is no one dominating like cesc, with the exception of drogba, but there is no one passing and scoring so beautifully, so he is on a roll now and can really shut up the critics in the next 5 games.
ReplyDelete@ greginho, had you noticed that what you had just said was what i said. there isn't a defining Cesc moment that all modern greats should have. more importantly, he didn't have a major club achievement(that he was in the thick of) yet. And i am quite puzzled why i can't cut and pasted something from the other blog, since i had the same idea???*scratch head* And is Opta a bizarre ranking? isn't YFF powered by opta's stats? And certainly i hope he can shut up the critics in the next 4 games.
ReplyDelete~Newbie
i liked AM response to you that those rankings are ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI've got 10.8 to spend on a midfielder. Seriously considering DDunn. Does anyone know if he's gonna be fit to play?
ReplyDeleteWhy not Modric? He's a guaranteed starter and looked really good in his first two games back.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Modric would be a better choice.
ReplyDeleteI'm after some advice. I've got Tevez at 14.50, and have 0.3 in the bank. I definitely want Tevez for next week vs Portsmouth(assuming United don't do a hatchet job on him at OT) but should I drop him for Rodallega for this week only who is at 14.65, and then hope that Tevez's value drops from 15.54 this week by at least 1 point (through not playing) and then make a straight swap back for next week, or should I just stick with Tevez this week and take the nul points on the chin. I've made a lot of stupid moves this season so trying to think everything through now.
ReplyDelete@anon 5:47 - You don't have a big discount on Tevez right now and holding on to him and missing out on points for 1 unit does not make sense to me. I'd Replace him with another player and get him back on the BD, even if it means making a few changes elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteYou're not as bad as a guy on the "Choose Em' Loose Em' column on Yahoo! He doesn't know whether to hold on or drop Tevez @ the price of 9 units (that's a 6 something discount), he doesn't know the luxury he has lol
(Honduran-Saul)
"McCarthy (price is right if you want to see if his game-winning performance last weekend was a fluke or something real - Rovers don't seem like a bad choice if you're going to bet on "real"); and"
ReplyDeleteno McCarthy in Rovers midfielder list (Yahoo FF), but there's one in Wigan's..
u r referring to Rovers' McCarthy, right?
He is referring to Wigan's opposition (Rovers) when saying it's not a bad idea to bet against them if you think McCarthy (Wigan) is a good player.
ReplyDeleteNeil....do you have a glossary of all your nicknames that you use? I love your blog, but often don't know who the players are that you recommend cause you have these made up names...
ReplyDeleteIt's James McCarthy from Wigan, who scored a goal against Wolves.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_5851818,00.html
I had him in the barndoor window at 5+. Dropped him as I am not totally convinced yet, but need more time to observe him. Looks an interesting prospect based on vs Wolves game, may be tempted to pick him if he starts a few more games for Martinez in future.
Did anyone else get hosed while selecting their new team? I had Fabs at 17+ I made a change to another player, cancelled the change, and now he is 21+.
ReplyDeleteAlmunia's price jumped up about a point as well. Infuriating to lose 5.5 pts for nothing...
ReplyDeletewow a Friday trade that worked out. I had Heitinga and Defoe but that just didn't feel right so I dumped them and picked up Rooney and Stearman. Jumped over 500 places today thanks to Wayne's 4 goals!!
ReplyDelete
