Early Doors

Happier times.

We're just weeks into the new year and it's already time for many happy returns.

Welcome back fixture uncertainty and two-gamers! We're trying to confirm with Yahoo! that the rescheduled fixtures - Liv/Tot and Ars/Bol - will be added to match week 19. Assume they will, and we'll let you all know when we get the final word.

Welcome back Edwin van der Sar:
Edwin van der Sar has returned to training with Manchester United after taking compassionate leave.

The 39-year old's wife collapsed with a brain hemorrhage in December, and the veteran goalkeeper has been absent from training for three week.

Medical tests have shown that van der Sar's wife has suffered no permanent damage, and he has traveled to Qatar to take part in United's winter training camp, according to The Guardian.
So automatically we have a doubt between Kuszczak and van der Sar in net for the Red Devils.  That is just terrible timing for a two-match week.  Especially THIS two-match week with ManU nailed on for two clean sheets at home against Burnley and Hull.  Maybe we'll know more by the weekend, but my guess will be that we won't know who is starting the Burnley match until the Burnley match starts.  And that may not mean that that keeper is the long- or even medium-term number one.

Welcome back Fabregas and Denilson:
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas says his injured hamstring feels ''100%'' and that he should be fit to make his return for the weekend trip to Bolton Wanderers.

Fabregas has missed Arsenal's last three games with a hamstring problem which he aggravated during a stunning cameo against Aston Villa over Christmas, when he came off the bench to score twice.

Initially there were fears he could have missed a month of action, but Fabregas now claims he is ready to make his comeback.

"My hamstring feels 100% now," said Fabregas. "The snow may have disrupted the football, but it hasn't interrupted my rehab."

On Monday, it was confirmed Denilson would also be available for Sunday's trip.

The Brazilian was forced to leave the pitch late on during Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Everton at the weekend and with the 21 year-old having just returned from a back injury there had also been fears of a longer lay-off.
So Ramsey goes back to fantasy obscurity where he belongs.  He could evolve into another Scholes.  Seems like a great pick but just never pans out.  It's not his fault.  He's a great player but right now he's just not worth the investment for fantasy.

Welcome back... SOL CAMPBELL!?!?!?
Tonight’s Reserve team to face West Ham United at Upton Park features Sol Campbell, who plays tonight on a Reserve League registration.

Talks are ongoing with Sol with a view to a permanent move back to Arsenal Football Club.
What, was Steve Bould too busy with the youth team?

I wanted to throw out my $0.02 on the "ManU shouldn't have sold Tevez/ManU shouldn't have bought Berbatov" frenzy that's all the rage on the internet-o-spheres.  I don't think that Tevez could have stayed or that he would have been an asset if he had stayed.  He's shown that he's at his best when he's the man.  His best form comes when he's given the responsibility of being the leader of a team - his end of season run with West Ham, and now leading the line for Citeh.  That was never going to happen at ManU where he was always going to an understudy to Rooney.  Unfortunately, the same comments can be made of Berbatov.  He needs to be the man.  He's not going to be happy - or effective - in a support role.  He needs play to go through him and others to play for him.

What ManU is lacking isn't a Carlos Tevez.  ManU are lacking a K2.  A Roque Santa Cruz.  Or even a Benjani.  They don't have a striker with the size and physicality to take on center backs and win the one-on-one battles for the ball.  Berbatov is amazingly skilled, as is Rooney, and they can make the most amazing things happen on the pitch.  But too often they find the ball in midfield rather than in the attacking third.  Yes, as Neal likes to point out, much of that has to do with deficiencies in ManU's midfield.  The striikers too often need to be creators as well as finishers and that just isn't working this season without a certain player who would get beyond the strikers via a run or a dribble.

And maybe that player doesn't have to be Ronaldo.  When it has been Giggs this season ManU have been nigh-unstoppable.  Valencia has shown more and more that he can be that type of player.  But what if ManU had kept faith with Chris Eagles?  He is showing the kind of pace, skill and ambition that ManU could use either to replace Giggs or to flank him.  It's taken six years since he debuted for ManU for him to become a consistent Premier League player, but it's happening.  And since he's left Tosic and Obertan have come in but neither have shown that they're anywhere near ready for a regular place.

 ---

Finally, I want to have you all help me in wishing Neal a very happy 40th birthday.  Neal was the one who said, "Why don't we put this stuff down in a blog?" and "Why don't we try to get in touch with Yahoo!" and I'm indebted to him for that.  He's also been a good friend and constant companion on instant messenger for years.  So congrats on the big 4-0, Neal.  Here's hoping the next decade starts on a high(bury) and that 40 (emi)rates a 10.

Do you know why the Man United v Hull game is being included in Week 19 instead of week 20?

When you look at the fixtures, although they are the only game being played next Saturday, all the other teams are playing in week 20 on Tuesday or Wednesday. Any other week and ManU Hull would be in week 20 along with the other games scheduled for the Tue/Wed...

    Any advice would be great!!

    Happy birthday Neal!

I can't see any reason why the Arsenal/Liverpool games won't be added. Yahoo normally wait until Thursday/Friday before adding extra fixtures to the list.

In response to Init (above), your guess is as good as mine. There's absolutely no logic to Man Utd's game being in this week's fixtures!

  5. Happy Birthday Neal!

I'll echo the other posts - why on earth is Man Utd's 2nd game being added to Week 19 when it should be in Week 20!? Answers on a postcard...

@CJ, i had that problem with AM's blog, what has happened is that the shortcut you're using is directing you only to posts in 2009. Try researching for it on google and you'll get all the latest posts. JT

for those who keep asking why man u vs hull fall in week 19, the answer is either:

i)FA re-scheduled that game and yahoo not amend yet or
ii) Yahoo give us adequate time to make a right selection based on the latest news (injury, transfers). if man u vs hull fall in week 20, the deadline will be 3 days before 26th and anything can happen to your players..

    pls choose :)

'They don't have a striker with the size and physicality to take on center backs and win the one-on-one battles for the ball.'

they didn't have that when CRon/Tevez/Rooney, the triple threat played. formation then - 4-3-3 . Tevez should stay. they problem today at Man Utd was due to 4-4-2 and with rooney at the (2) position. he always goes deep, deper, till wingback position. and without CR7, there is no more runner up front. the next problem is BerbaFlop who stay at no man's land(amc)/can't beat the defenders/can't run at goal SOLO. when you play 4-4-2, the (2) must try to stay up. with the old system, its always CR7 first, the other two surge forward into empty spaces.

and Tevez CAN win one-on-one battle ! and can chase after the ball(unlike berbaflop) . that is a difference. rooney works well with runners, tevez too, and both are runners(into space). berbaflop need 'pass to feet'. and to say his is magically skilled. that's because he hang onto the ball too much. as the apex of the attack he has failed in his performances.

they don't have a natural striker like Ruud...and now they have a chance to take him back on loan...pls SAF :)

oh, and the old formation can have 7 'defenders' (4+3)and 3 'attackers'. steady and quick counters. New formation(current) 4 'defenders' 6'attackers'. putting a huge emphasis on wingplay. vulnerable to counters/slower football in moving team up to support the attack [when in past its less needed when there is a SOLO CR7].

The trouble with virtually any criticism levelled at Berbatovs play was that he was unstoppable at spurs - people say he can't do this or that - well he was good at dropping off, pushing forward, taking it past players, holding the ball up, winning balls in the air and shooting when he was with us. Is it perhaps either a) he needs to be the main man, as Jeremy suggests, or b) Utd just arent using him properly. I might go out on a limb here and say that Rooney is perhaps a luxury, too erratic to build a team around. Berbatov works well with a player running off of him, Rooney disappears into midfield ALL the time. Any united fans who would like to dismiss Berbs as rubbish should take a look at youtube.

  18. I agree with the comment above. If anything, Berbatov has been misused at United. He was scoring in Tottenham because they allowed him to back guys up and then just launched it up to him. He's never going to just tear up the field but he's great at that first touch, turn and shoot. United always want to make that perfect pass off the build-up and he doesn't have the pace for that imo.

in fact, to add to my post @1104/1107/1112 , berbatov goal record not really impressive either. in fact, i do think he is more Crouchie2 than Drogba/Torres type do-it-alone . And that is the weakness in his game.

^and for berbaflop to be be good, isn't it clear that a Tevez will do,with a 4-3-3 ?

  22. Happy Birthday NThurm...howabout you come up to Philly for the NSCAA convention this weekend? Now that's a way to spend a fortieth! Listening to the likes of Howard Wilkinson and co ryan (babble) on about how soccer in the US is on the up blah blah blah..anyway, I will be there working and also for the MLS Draft...good times. If anyone of you Barn door regulars happen to be in the area then come by and say hello! I'll be at the Inaria booth (soccer apparel).

  23. Oh and just to throw my $0.02 in, Plain and simple, Dimitar Berbatov is a talented player but the price-tag Utd paid was probably double what it should have been. If he had signed for 15m quid then I think we would have seen a different outcome. I still think he is in the right team, just not settled yet. I'm not sure if Fergie's the right coach to get the most out of a player like him either. I'm surprised SAF has not done a Rafa and got shot of him like Robbie Keane!

  24. And one more thing! Anyone see this interview with K2 about the gun attacks? Surely he shouldn't be wearing that shirt??
