Ameobi fires Magpies to victory

So Newcastle is into the UEFA Cup, or at least the qualifying rounds. Now they can offer "European football" to their potential transfers, Duff, et al.

Speaking of which, why Duff? I have to admit to being excited because Duff is one of my favorite players. But Newcastle is pretty solid in the midfield as is, especially with N'Zogbia establishing himself on the left. And Duff has a history of injury. Not something Newcastle need more of.

Is N'Zog too young for a full season of work? Would Duff be pushed up as a striker, as he has for the Republic of Ireland (alongside Robbie Keane)?

I have to think they want to use him as a forward. It's just not sensible otherwise. And honestly, what choice would they have at the moment?

  2. Yahoo usually post the new game about a week to 10 days before the kickoff of the actually Premier League season so we probably have another couple week to wait.

As for Duff at striker, it would make sense and, at the same time, completely destroy his fantasy value for the first quarter of the season (given all the cheap strikers on their way - see, Sheva, Berbatov, new ManYoo striker, etc.)

  3. Come on now Jeremy, we all know that Micky O needs a little company in the trainers room!

In all seriousness and with all due respect, how could a club like Newcastle not jump at the chance to sign a world class (when he's healthy) winger like Duff, especially for 5m? To be honest, the real United should have jumped on that deal, but I suppose if they would have bid the price would have been 15m.

  4. I have to say that my suspicion is that Chelsea took a huge loss on Duff (rather than just a small one if they'd sold him to Spurs) because they didn't want him to end up at a team that could cost them points this year. Spurs with Berbatov and Duff added to their already-impressive base of talent could cause problems. NUFC are unlikely to make much of a dent unless about five more players come in between now and the 19th of August.

Not sure Chelsea would have sold to ManYoo even if they had bid 15m...

Neal -- Might it actually make Duff a better fantasy value? You know, that coveted player who is listed as a middie but plays as a forward? I doubt Yahoo will change his classification.
