Bullard given free role at Cottage

Bullard given free role at Cottage - Yahoo! Sport UK
Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard has been given a licence to roam by Cottagers boss Chris Coleman.Bullard made his first appearance at Craven Cottage in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Boavista, producing a lively display with Papa Bouba Diop anchoring the midfield.

...Bullard set up Heidar Helguson's opener with a pinpoint free-kick and his superb delivery will be welcomed by Fulham who have lacked a dead-ball specialist in recent times.
Bullard loooks primed to continue to be a fantasy stud in his sophmore season. Given license to support the attack and taking all the set-pieces for Fulham.

Though they don't have the easiest early schedule, Bullard should be a consistent point producer and would be well worth having on your team.

Community Shield

Good goals, and well worth watching again. Having already started their competitive play in Europe, Liverpool seemed a step ahead of Chelesea. For the champions, they had best get their game faces on before next weekend. Too many give-aways in midfield and too much space given in defense (including Crouch's goal).

From a fantasy perspective, Shevchenko looked dangerous, though he drifted out of the game. Several shots on target and the goal to his credit. It was a top-class goal, and of course it was set up by a delicious pass from Lampard. Cudicini made some good saves, in net for now as Cech recovers from surgery. He should have been better positioned for the first goal, but couldn't have done anything about the second. Robben looks to have stalled as a player, running into the same double-teams and dead-ends that he did in the World Cup for Holland.

Ballack's injury will affect many fantasy teams. Will he make the opener? And if he is healthy, is he ready to cotribute in the Premiership?

For Liverpool, Pennant, Garcia, and even Zenden looked dangerous at times. Aurelio came in at left midfield, though that position seems to be Gonzalez's to lose. However he looked good, forcing two saves out of Cudicini. One from a free kick and the other from almost the penalty spot as the ball squirmed across the defense.

And though neither player will feature in fantasy manager's plans, credit to both Essien and Sissoko who were their respective team's best players on the day.

Defoe on target in friendly win

Defoe on target in friendly win - Yahoo! Sport UK

Jermaine Jenas could have doubled the lead seven minutes later but he volleyed against the crossbar from six yards after Dimitar Berbatov had headed on a corner from Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zokora, making his home debut.

...Spurs re-established their advantage in the 61st minute when another Zokora corner was headed on by Berbatov, Calum Davenport challenged and Michael Dawson hammered home the loose ball.

Zokora taking corners. Something to think about.

Rooney could miss Man Utd's season opener

Rooney could miss Man Utd's season opener

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Wayne Rooney faces a race to be fit for next Sunday's Premiership opener against Fulham.

...The striker was missing again today as Manchester United wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 triumph over UEFA Cup winners Sevilla and Ferguson revealed he could be struggling to face the Cottagers next weekend. 'It is going to be a push for Wayne to be fit,' said the United boss. 'He has a groin injury, which is causing a little bit of bother at the moment. 'It is nothing serious but there is a worry about next Sunday.'
So maybe it's a bit more than a typical phantom ManU-player-before-an-international-friendly injury.

Wayne Rooney has been denied the chance to be part of Steve McClaren's first England squad through injury. The Manchester United star has not been included in the 25-strong party to face Greece in next Wednesday's friendly international at Old Trafford because of a groin injury.
How serious is this? Giggs-before-Wales, or is it a real injury?

Hibbert struck by mystery illness

Hibbert struck by mystery illness - Yahoo! Sport UK
Everton defender Tony Hibbert will miss the start of the new Premiership season after picking up a tropical disease while on holiday.
At least it wasn't glandular fever. That's so last season.

Who replaces Hibbert at right back for Everton, a team a lot of fantasy managers are looking at for the first week of the season? Will Yobo move to outside back? Will Phil Neville drop back from midfield? Or perhaps one of Everton's 3 left backs (Valente, Pistone, or Naysmith) can switch flanks.

Mourinho promises a new attacking Chelsea

Mourinho promises a new attacking Chelsea
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will adopt a more attacking approach this season to accommodate his new stars.

Moving to dismiss reports than new signing Michael Ballack and England international Frank Lampard would be battling for a single place in midfield the Chelsea boss revealed they will form a partnership as part of his 'attacking square'.

...Mourinho also revealed that he will play with two strikers to allow new £30million signing Andriy Shevchenko to partner Didier Drogba.

Mourinho also hinted he may change to a 4-4-2 formation, dispensing with his defensive midfielder, for the new campaign...

Pearce completes Trabelsi capture

Pearce completes Trabelsi capture - Yahoo! Sport UK

Manchester City have completed the signing of Tunisian World Cup defender Hatem Trabelsi from Ajax on a pay-as-you-play deal. The experienced full-back was forced to come through a series of stringent medical tests before agreeing what is believed to be a pay-as-you-play deal with the Blues.

Once courted by Manchester United and Arsenal, Trabelsi's ability is not in question but a series of knee injuries have placed a question mark over his durability.

Trabelsi still requires a work permit before officially being unveiled as a City player...
That seems like an awful lot of ifs... but if you're looking for an attacking full-back at transfer prices, you may have found your man.

Hammer blow for star Etherington

Hammer blow for star Etherington - Yahoo! Sport UK
West Ham are set to be without winger Matthew Etherington for the first three games of the new season after he damaged his knee in training.Etherington collided with striker Marlon Harewood, who landed on his knee and put him out of action for a month.
Not sure who would replace Eth on the left of WHU's midfield. Would Konchesky move forward from his left-back position, with Spector slotting into the defense? That would be quite interesting to fantasy managers. Might Benayoun switch flanks and Harewood move to the right? Or perhaps a "player to be named later" like Milner or Emerton?

Question of the Day

Are Chelsea going to be rampant at the beginning of the season, or will they take time to bed-in their new signings? Will we see the 4-nil Chelsea or the 1-0, late-winner Chelsea?

Or is their a third option?

Discuss.

Mourinho shrugs off Crespo departure

Mourinho shrugs off Crespo departure

More lineup notes, this time from Chelsea:
[Mourinho] expects the partnership of Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard to provide new thrust from midfield. He said: "The main change is that last season we played with just one attacking midfield player. This season, with Ballack and Lampard, we have players to score goals and get the ball to the box. We will play with just one holding midfield player."
Back to a 4-3-3? Seemingly back to the bench for Essien.

Saha - Ronaldo Must Show Quality

Saha - Ronaldo Must Show Quality - Yahoo! Sport UK

Surprising amount of ManU news - solid details - coming out these days. The latest is:
Having already ruled Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out of the season opener against Fulham on August 20, Sir Alex Ferguson will be relieved to know both Rooney and Paul Scholes will be available.
Spot on, Pierre.

So that leaves a back four of Hienze, Silvestre, Brown, and Evra? With the latter two at fullback. I'm assuming O'Shea will be needed in the midfield to partner Scholes.

What am I missing?

Chelsea pull out of Cole transfer

Chelsea pull out of Cole transfer - Yahoo! Sport UK
Chelsea have ruled out signing Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole "in the current circumstances" after claiming the asking price is too high.Arsenal have reportedly asked for £25million for the 25-year-old England defender, and Chelsea claim they will not buy unless the price drops.
The quotes don't seem as cut-and-dried as the headline would indicate. But this could clear up the left-back position at two clubs and barring any futher developments, give fantasy managers the chance to make their picks. While Cole is the cheaper option, he is a 1-gamer in week 1 to Bridge's 2 games.

Ahhhhh...

What a great day yesterday way. The release of the new version of the game. Endless IM sessions discussion line-up permutations and provisional line-ups. Throw in the first GameCast of the season (Arsenal's Champions League Qualifier) and things are looking up after a month of hanging on to pre-season reports and transfer rumors as the only outlet for the football-addicted among us (OK, I was following MLS as well, but it isn't quite the same).

As you have hopefully all seen, we have invited our readers into one of two private groups for this season. And, yes, that was a shameless plug - just imagine if we had actual sponsors - the shamelessness would be almost unbearable.

With that out of the way, I thought I'd start off with my initial thoughts as I spent some time with my line-up yesterday and started looking at things like schedule, etc.

My first thought, was about schedule and how bummed that I am that Arsenal and Liverpool are both one-gamers in the first week (even though both games are very attractive). Given the influx of talented newbies, I was ready for a strategy that got me Gerrard and Henry from the outset. As it stands, we have to make (or not make) the bet that these guys are capable of a game SO spectacular that it will make up for them not having two.

My second look was to the schedules for the two gamers which yielded the following teams as being good bets the first week - ManYoo, Spurs, West Ham, and Everton along with Chelsea. Actually, quite a lot to choose from.

So here's where that leads me in terms of my thoughts about my first starting line-up of the season:

Strikers (3 From) - Sheva, Drogba, Ashton, Berbatov, Rooney, AJ, and Keane with Sheva being a no-brainer for the money and Berbatov being pretty close to that. If he appears to be healthy, Saha enters into this mix as well (but how many times have we typed those words).

Midfielders (4 From) - Ballack, Lampard, Cahill, Arteta, Lennon, Convey, Benayoun, Etherington, Giggs, Ronaldo, and Park. Again, Ballack is something of a no brainer. Convey is a personal bias (nice wing player who will be a points machine unless Reading is completely overmatched). Cahill and Arteta are priced to move and have a nice first week schedule. Lennon is even cheaper and seems likely to start in the wake of his World Cup appearance. There are always old standbys like MGP and Joey Barton but the schedule isn't really in their favor this week (although MGP generally starts brightly). The real tragedy is that Liverpool's midfield trio of Pennant, Gonzalez (who scored within 3 minutes of his Anfield debut), and Gerrard don't make much sense. You may notice that Paul Scholes is not on this list - that is not an omission, Paul Scholes is dead to me - he's screwed my fantasy roster up too many times to be counted on.

Defenders (3 From) - Terry, Bridge, Heinze, Dawson, A. Ferdinand, M. Taylor, and Neville. The absence of Arsenal defenders Hoyte and Djourou as viable options here makes this a lot tougher. With few high profile signings at the back, there aren't many bargains to be had. If Ashley Cole makes the move to Stamford Bridge, then his name replaces Bridge's as a contender for the first week. If you figure out who starts on the right for the Hammers (Pantsil/Mears/Spector) - they might be a price-effective pick-up that allows you to spend your money elsewhere.

Keepers (1 From) - Tim Howard. Unless you're planning to spend a bundle, T-Ho is the obvious choice coming off a year of sitting at Man United. Hard to believe a former Premiership Keeper of the Year who is under 30 and has no history of injuries has had so much trouble getting a match. If you're not shy about spending on your keeper, then Cech and van der Saar are the two obvious choices with Robinson in 3rd.

In the meantime, please join me in hoping against all hope that one of the Premiership teams in the running can close a deal for Obefemi Martins - as Jeremy pointed out, he's a better version of LuaLua and his name is nearly as much fun to say.

Finally, we throw out a fond farewell to Nigel Reo-Coker who went from being a great fantasy player when listed as a defender while playing midfield to a fantasy afterthought now that he's (correctly) listed as a midfielder. It was great getting to know you (although better for Jeremy than the rest of us).

Only 10 days left...

Question of the Day

Is Jermaine Pennant worth more to fantasy managers now that he is at Liverpool, or less now that he won't be the first option in attack or on set pieces?

Discuss.

United will launch red card appeals

United will launch red card appeals - Yahoo! Sport UK

Continuing to follow this story.

Worst case scenario:
If the charges of violent conduct and serious foul play are not overturned, the pair will miss the trip to Charlton on August 23, plus the home encounter with Watford on August 26, then, most crucially, the Old Trafford clash against Tottenham on September 9.
But seemingly more likely:
Despite this, it still seems certain both men will have their punishments downgraded to yellow cards, which would effectively clear Rooney and leave Scholes to serve a one-match suspension for the Charlton clash as he had already been cautioned against the Portuguese champions.
So pick up Rooney if you can spare the 15 bucks/pounds/euros/units. I know you weren't going to pick Scholes anyway as he is fantasy poison.

Ref Delay Plays Into Duo's Hands - Yahoo! Sport UK

An update on an earlier story...

Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes will be free to face Fulham on August 20, even though they still remain unsure whether they will have to serve suspensions for their recent red cards in Amsterdam.

The pair were sent off during United's win over Porto on Friday night, yet four days on the Football Association are still waiting to hear whether the dismissals were reported to the Dutch FA.

...as no punishment can be imposed until 14 days after the FA receive the referee's report, both Rooney and Scholes are free to face Fulham in United's Premiership opener and, in all probability, Charlton four days later.
