Injuries and Suspensions

BBC SPORT | Football | Premier League | Man Utd v Birmingham
Man Utd have defensive problems despite Wes Brown's recovery from a thigh problem, with Jonny Evans doubtful and Nemanja Vidic and Rafael ruled out.

Ben Foster (knee) or Tomasz Kuszczak will deputise for Edwin van der Sar, while Nani (shoulder) could feature after playing for Portugal in midweek.
That doesn't help much now does it?  So now the big gamble - do we go with Foster or Kuszczak? or just go in another direction entirely to guarantee ourselves SOME points for the goalkeeper position this week?  Despite Jeremy's warnings about Friday trades, I'm definitely going to be thinking about options here.

In other relevant news, it looks like (depending your source) that there is some level of certainty that someone named Ryan Shotton will replace Wilko at right back for Stoke depriving us of an inexpensive starter with a decent schedule this week.  Don't get me wrong, Shotton isn't expensive but he's more expensive than Wilkinson.

In Arsenal injury news, Vermaelen will apparently make his debut while Diaby, Djourou, Fabianski, Nasri, Sicky, and Theo are all out.  Going to be an interesting attacking line-up out there.  Who fills the spaces around Song, Cesc, Arshavin, and RvP?  Bendtner? EdS? Wilshere? Denilson? Good think Arsenal only play one match this week because otherwise my head would be about to explode trying to figure this out.

At Liverpool, looks like Insua is the only reasonable option at left back as Aurelio will be injured to start the season, he isn't exactly cheap but both he and Skertl are both pretty good deals compared to the alternatives at ManYoo and Chelsea.  In Gerrard news, SoccerNet has him as "being monitored" while BBC doesn't mention his health as an issue at all.

Speaking of Chelsea, the only real news there is that Zhirkov and JCole are both on the shelf - this obviously makes Malouda a decent bet albeit at more money that you'd want to pay.

Not particularly relevant for this week's squad but it looks like Villa will give Fabien Delph some time so probably worth checking in on that match to see how the kid looks and where he's playing.

Those are the critical updates for me, lots of other equivocating going on about this or that player "maybe being handed their debut" (I'm looking at you Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez) but nothing that written with enough certainty that you'd want to make too many roster decisions as a result.  For a more complete listing of the news as it is being updated throughout the day.  Check here. We'll be back if there's anything more specific on Foster/Kuszczak during the day.

Good luck and enjoy the first weekend!

Cheers - Neal
