Big Guns

Alternate title, "In Praise of Well Chosen One-Gamers".  From the BBC's live commentary:
Liverpool goal: Old Trafford is stunned into silence as Liverpool take the lead through a Fernando Torres header. Steven Gerrard plays in Dirk Kuyt down the right and the Dutch international delivers a teasing cross that a completely unmarked Torres heads home.
Manchester United goal: Wayne Rooney equalises, tucking home the rebound after Pepe Reina makes a brilliant save to parry the spot kick. Rooney is a touch fortunate that the rebound falls so invitingly to him. The penalty is awarded after Javier Mascherano brings down Antonio Valencia. Mascherano is fortunate to stay on the pitch, yet it looks as though the foul started outside the box and thus should have been a free-kick.
I know the "point per unit spent" rule and I think it has value in setting up your team week to week.  But sometimes you have to pay for quality.

  1. Will Rooney lose points for a missed penalty? Technically he scored from open play AFTER the penalty was missed. So that would be -6 for the miss, 7 for the goal and 3 for the SOT. Net gain of 4. Anyone know if that is what is usually done in that situation?

yes he will lose some points.... which is a good news for me, in fact, the best news (Man Utd won it, rooney "only" 11.5 for the week)... lol

but pls, drogba, score another one for us (1-0 at 67 mins)

For Rooney its -6 Penalty saved + 3 SOT then another +3 SOT and +7 Goal for 7pts total after the miss.

Huge disappointment. Sometimes feels like I am the only vocal Liverpool supporter.

Yeah 9 points for a guy who cost 20 isn't really that great...you can't ignore point per cost, if everyone performed at that level you'd have a score below 50 for the weekend.

  6. Kellz had it spot on. They counted both the original penalty and the rebound as SOTs.

Still, 20.5 points combined from Rooney and Torres really undercuts the point of this post. You definitely had a bad week if you spent a lot of your budget on those two.

I agree. Stay well away from top 4 club players when they play each other.

    I stand corrected.
Never pick top 4 vs top 4 except for Drogba against Arsenal. Although not quite as relevent if Senderos is not playing.

  13. @Caleb - Rooney also does a number on Arsenal, their defence isn't as good as Manchester, Chelsea and Liverpool.

  16. @Anon 2:56 - Big Bad Friedel was the smart choice in goalkeeping, he just got unlucky and Kirky got lucky, It could've easily gone the other way.

Anyways I'm going for Myhill this time around as I feel Hull are strong at Home and should make it Difficult for Fulham, who are terrible away.

    Current team atm:

    Myhill
    Bale/Jagielka/Salgado
    Krankjar/Bullard/Giggsy/Johnson
    Bendtner/Tevez/Torres

I'm keeping my eye on Rafael DaSilva, if he's tipped to start I'll trade Salgado in for him. Also Krankjar and Johnson may go as they're doubtful...possibly for Dempsey and Benayoun, who should get his first start in weeks. I don't know yet though as I feel Rafael/Benayoun are just as risky as Krank/Johnson. What do you guys think???

Still holding THo in goal at a decent price. Really held back from moving him to BBBF last weekend, so far so good there.

Rafael bugs me because SAF is so unpredictable with playing time. We know Rafael will be a good fantasy producer once he is let loose. Benayoun? I remember that guy. Lol.

Krank/Johnson at this point in the week would be wear I'd stay Saul. I haven't heard anything yet about health issues either. Maybe I missed it.

I'd say Drogba for most big games. He's always the most likely to score for Chelsea. Anelka can usually be counted on to miss 4/5 great chances.
