This is a week old now, but I had missed it. So maybe you did too.
Didier Drogba is set to miss the start of the Premier League season after Chelsea confirmed that the striker underwent surgery on Friday for a groin injury.
He will be sidelined for around three weeks, leaving Carlo Ancelotti with little option but to step up the search for fresh blood, possibly in the form of Benfica pair Ramirez and David Luiz.
Drogba, 32, will certainly miss the Community Shield against Manchester United on August 8, and it is likely that the Ivory Coast international will be unavailable when Chelsea begin their league defence against West Bromwich Albion on August 14.
Although Chelsea’s start to the season, which sees them play West Brom, Wigan and Stoke in their first three matches, should not force them to break much of a sweat, the absence of their key striker leaves Ancelotti with something of a dilemma.
Chelsea have already lost defender Alex for the start of the season due to a thigh injury, while goalkeeper Petr Cech is also out for a month with a calf problem — injuries which could be interpreted as further evidence of the ageing squad on which he has to call.
Anelka, FloMa and Benayoun look great bets, as does Lampard if you can afford him.

ReplyDeletearen't we afraid of the steve sidwell, situation. he was a stud and went to chelsea and became a secondary player, lost his edge and never got it back. so many middle level guys go to overstocked big teams and the fade into the sunset. joe cole did it, as well. half of the man city midfield did that.

@Greg - this exactly why I get nervous when I hear about Man City going after Landon Donovan. I get the idea of more money, but I do not understand how any good player at the apex of his career would want to go to a bloated club like City.

Are you sure? Because the Chelsea website says Drogba is in the squad for the friendlies in Germany:

If he's in the squad for the Frankfurt and Hamburg matches, then I'm kinda sure he'll play United at Wembley and also the opening games
