Wigan take Al Habsi on loan

Al Habsi signs on the dotted line

UPDATE:  Here's some more information that sheds some light on the context of this signing:
Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland is off the club's pre-season trip to Sweden today with a back injury - to give Roberto Martinez a major headache.

Kirkland pulled up in training and will be left at home for treatment, leaving Latics with just one fit senior keeper in veteran Mike Pollitt.

If Kirkland is sidelined for any length of time Martinez may have to make an emergency signing as both Richard Kingson and Vladimir Stojkovic - who appeared for Nigeria and Serbia in the World Cup - have left the club.
So not only will Al Habsi provide backup for Kirkland, and not only could he challenge for the gloves... he may be wearing the gloves when the season opens, at home, against Blackpool.

Wigan take Al Habsi on loan - Yahoo! Eurosport
Wigan have snapped up Oman international goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals Bolton.

Al Habsi had limited opportunities at the Reebok Stadium but did impress when offered a run in the side which competed in the UEFA Cup in the 2007-08 season.
Al Habsi did impress and was a potential number one for Bolton before Jussi resigned, what, two years ago?

Something to keep in mind as Kirkland is increasingly fragile and injury prone.

Wigan already has one of the star keepers of the World Cup, Richard Kingson, as a backup. Is he going to go up the pecking order at all after his great performance for Ghana, or does this move mean he's going to be sold?

  2. I've never been impressed with Kingson. And when Kirkland went down at the end of last season, it was Stojkovic who got the starts.

Kingson doesn't play for Wigan any more. And, according to the article above, is no longer Ghanian, but Nigerian.
