Clint made a good run in the middle, the ball fell to me ... time kind of stopped," Donovan said. "You can't miss from there."

"We're not done yet," Donovan said. "We believe, man. We're alive, baby."

  1. Such classic American story! Can we score earlier a bit next time? I was just so scared. Great Donovan! Great game!

  2. We DID score earlier. These disallowed goals are so frustrating!

  3. Well, too many chances were lost to nail down the win in the 90 mins.

  4. Should have been 4-0 but doesn't matter now - VICTORY!

  6. hopefully, those b.s. calls will have been all used up in these group matches. even with the officials doing everything they can to F us, we come out with the win. disallowed goal, dempsey getting punched in the mouth, beasley phantom handball...

    go USA!!!

    Congrats to USA!
At the end of the day the better two teams went trough. But we (Slovenia) were so close. :) Just so frustrating! So close!

It was the first game on this WC that England showed flashes of what they are capable of. I still think we put up a good showing and did better than expected.

Wish you luck in the last 16!

@Partly Sunny: Very hard fought world cup. Be proud and thank you!

I was reading some of the comments on Yahoo's gamecast of the USA v Algeria match, and honestly I can't believe the level of stupidity and arrogance from self named English fans. But I guess that just comes with the territory as Group Winners :D

    GO USA!

  9. i am down here in samba country and it is amazing how annoying some of the brasilian fans are. actually, all of them are pretty much the same. they do not care how the goals come, just as long as they come, they don't care how the team wins, just as long as they win. they will bitch and moan, from time to time about brasil not playing beautifully, but they only want a victory. the term jogabonito, which is such a cliche, doesn't apply to brasil. dribbling the ball and not passing to open teammates is not bonito. shooting ridiculously long distances, sending the ball deep into the stands, is not bonito. the only passing the brasileiros do, is when they try a ridiclously hard pass, that if it works it might be brilliant, but the majority of the time it doesn't. i get the pleasure of playing in leagues down here and see how my 7 year old is getting trained, plus watching the domestic leagues. my son is practicing more taking free kicks than passing and running to space. the only brasilian that is pass first is ronaldinho gaucho.

when the US tied england on the goalie error, they all said that the US deserved to lose. every rival, they claim that the ref cheated in their favor, that they got lucky or that it is a conspiracy against brasil. if a team gets a penalty against brasil, they never admit that it was a penalty. if the team scores that goal, they claim it is luck, but if brasil wins of only one penalty kick goal, they don't bitch one second. they where all saying that beasley should have been red carded for his hand ball today, but their short term memory, doesn't let them remember that luis fabiano got to hand the ball twice in one play that he scored on. i guess it is really hard living someplace that knows football better than anywhere else in the world, and they sure let everyone know it.

@greginho: always great to hear your side of things. You always make a fun post to read. I guess you can never really get an unbiased supporter (myself included). Needless to say, no one can take away the hard work, passion, and determination of the US. You never see a USA player complaining to the ref on something that doesn't have an acctual merit, you never see a USA player rolling on the floor trying to con the ref for a foul unless they actually got hit hard, you never see the USA make the selfish play but instead pass to space. Maybe this hurts us overall, but I'd much rather have a collective, bonded passing team than 11 players who all want to dribble the ball (Lucio get back to the center of the defense lol)

    Good luck Greg!

Great result but not sure about Bill Clinton's war reference after the game.

  12. @greginho - didn't those brazilians watch that reply of beasley's "handball"? he trapped it with his chest, shouldn't have even been a call. between that, the disallowed goal and dempsey getting punched in the face, I don't know how anyone could talk about ref's going in our favor. I really couldn't believe the fabiano double handball goal; and the ref basically yuckin' it up with him afterwards kind of saying yeah that was a handball but i didn't call it. f'ing disgrace..

  13. Ye I agree with Anon, why does war always seem to creep in to whatever sports result?

I loved how all the US players celebrated after the goal, really in such moments you are at the height of joy and I think its the best feeling you can have to score such an important goal.

  14. i thinks it is the USMNT's requirement to have bloodied players in every world cup game. i remember 3 for brian mcbride, i remember tab ramos from leonardo's elbow, the just fired coach of juventus, i remember lalas getting cleated in the face, agoos getting pushed into the post and gashing his head, i remember tomas dooley getting kicked in the side of the neck and at least once for brad friedel. this just shows that the US can take it, but at what point are they gonna dish it out.
the other country that i support is the dutch because both of my parents were born there. how many games have the dutch lost because the other team gets incredibly physical and the dutch don't respond?

    ReplyDelete
  15. @greginho - i'd say Dempsey dished in out pretty well in the first few minutes of the Slovenia match with that elbow.

I think with the dutch it was always Van Bommel, but doesn't seem to have the fire he once had. Maybe DeJong & Heitinga too, other than that, they're pretty fragile.

I would have to say that it would be a disgrace if donovan didnt score in that position. Also, the US were fortunate to score even on the play, which happened to be a 4 on 2.

I got quite a laugh from glenn beck the other trying to compare soccer to Obama, hes such an idiot
