Bill Simmons: Phoenix Suns trying to erase 40 years of stomach punches
It started with the Manchester City-Tottenham Hotspur game, which I watched with long-suffering City fan Marc Stein in a Phoenix hotel room.
I wanted to post this yesterday as it was Simmons' big intro to his latest column. Here are two of the World Leader's biggest names (online, at least) talking about, and really being engaged with, the Premier League. It bodes well for the future of the sport here in the States, even if it doesn't bode well for MLS who just can't capture the country's imagination in the same way as these teams from across the pond.

I wanted to post this yesterday, but didn't think I had a good hook for doing so. This morning, Neal pointed out that it being discussed was hook enough. As Neal wrote, "[T]his is pretty representative of how far the game has come when high profile ESPN personalities are watching Prem games and writing about them and following teams and the like. To describe any American fan of the Prem as 'long suffering' is a pretty powerful statement in and of itself."

  2. Simmons' interest is significant. Love him or hate him (I'm a huge fan), his readership is HUGE. Soccer in the US has never had a more popular sportswriter acknowledge it with the level of respect that Simmons does. Yes, the old school columnists and sportsradio guys may still ignore or demean the sport, but anyone who's relevant now gives soccer its due. We've come a long way in the past 10-15 years alone. God bless the internet.

    PS Where's the pic from?
