Ferguson already knew John O'Shea was a major doubt for the short trip to the Reebok Stadium after the defender was forced to pull out of Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw in Switzerland with a knee problem.
But the news just got even worse last night as first Louis Saha limped out of France's victory over the Faroe Islands after just seven minutes, then Gary Neville hobbled off in Katowice during the first half of England's 2-1 win over Poland and both must be regarded as serious doubts for the Bolton trip.
With Wes Brown still sidelined and Rio Ferdinand's eight-month suspension still having another week to run, it leaves Ferguson chronically short of defenders and almost certain to turn to Heinze, who he knows is fully match fit.
