Injuries and Suspensions: Week 3

Premier League team news - ESPN Soccernet:

There are a fair number of interesting line-up machinations related to injuries, suspensions, and transfers.  For all of the fantasy implications for this weekend, here is everything you need to know:

Manchester United down to bare bones

Crocked Rio out for six weeks | Manchester United Football Club News, Fixtures, Results, Gossip | Football365
Sir Alex Ferguson revealed after the game Ferdinand will miss six weeks, meaning he will be out until the start of October...

Fellow central defender Nemanja Vidic also succumbed to injury on Sunday, struggling with a calf problem with the opening minutes before eventually coming off just after half-time.

It all adds up to serious defensive concerns for Ferguson who has also lost Rafael for 10 weeks after he dislocated a shoulder in training....

"Young Rafa has done his shoulder in training in Friday and will be out for 10 weeks, he's probably going to have an operation.

"Rio will be out for six weeks. Vida will have checks tomorrow, we don't know if it's just a nerve or something, but he could be out for a couple of weeks."
With Evra coming back (presumably) United have Evans and Jones (or Smalling) at center back, and Fabio (or Smalling) on the right. That is strength in depth, but certainly it's not a happy morning at Carrington.

Rio Ferdinand Out for the Season?

Rio Ferdinand Potentially Out for the Season | Never Captain Nicky Butt

Never Captain Nicky Butt does the yoeman's work of rounding up the defensive injury crisis at Manchester United that we highlighted yesterday.

The news is that Rio may be done for the year, which would be a big blow to United as they continue to compete on three fronts. More immediately, it looks like we'll have a back four of Evra, Smalling, Brown and Fabio or Fletcher (Fletcher is out of the match with an illness) this weekend against Bolton. I would look to Bolton to play Petrov on the left to try to get behind whichever makeshift right back United put out. And through the middle... well we saw last weekend what Kevin Davies is still capable of. He must be licking his lips at the prospect of dueling with the inexperienced Smalling and/or the honestly past-it Wes Brown.

Arsenal vs. ManYoo: A Look Ahead

Welcome to March.  That time of the year when we can expect crazy weather here on the East Coast of the United States that varies from snow to torrential rain to sunny and 70 degrees.  What else do we expect from March? Spring Training in baseball.  One amazing college basketball tournament.  Heavy squad rotation and injuries that throw our fantasy EPL line-ups into massive chaos.  And...most importantly for this particular post, March is about the time each year when we learn what combination of injuries, tragic mistakes, and bad luck will take Arsenal from "competing on four fronts" to "long shot for the league and booted out of the other tournaments".

Is this year going to be any different for Arsenal? Tomorrow will tell.  As far as I see it, the season can go two ways:

Leadership

Apropos of yesterday's discussion about leadership in the Arsenal squad, I found this story to be revealing:

Rio Ferdinand will always remember his first day at Manchester United and the childlike excitement of pulling on the strip. "I was thinking to myself: 'These are Man United socks, this is how they feel. This is how the shirt feels, these are their shorts.'" Then he went out for his first training session and, bang, Roy Keane was screaming in his face.

Ferdinand had made the mistake of taking the safe option, playing a nice, easy pass to his nearest team-mate. He remembers Keane "went mental and barked: 'Pass the fucking ball forward.' I looked at him, his face all contorted, and he goes: 'It's fucking easy going sideways, pass it forward.'"

No Rest for the Defence

So, Robbie... tell about Liverpool. Did they treat you well there?

... or "It's all happening at the back".

Liverpool agree fee of £2.5m for Aston Villa's Luke Young
Liverpool have made a surprise move for the Aston Villa full-back Luke Young. Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager, tried to sign Young earlier this year when he was in charge of Fulham and he has now rekindled his interest in the former England international. Liverpool have agreed a £2.5m fee for a player who has been told he is surplus to requirements at Villa Park.

Although Hodgson's pursuit of Young might raise a few eyebrows among Liverpool supporters, the 31-year-old is able to operate in both full-back positions... He would also increase Liverpool's quota of homegrown players to comply with the new Premier League rule.
Young has long been a fantasy favorite, back to his Charlton days when he was listed in the game as "Young, Luke". He was also a fierce tackling, adventurous fullback. Which we love. I don't remember where his price was last season, but hopefully we'll get another starting full back on a top-7 team for reasonable money.

Summer Reading: Ajax Youth Academy

How a Soccer Star Is Made - NYTimes.com

As we're waiting for the World Cup to get under way and don't have much other than transfer speculation and injury news to contemplate, I give you this (very) long but excellent look at youth academies and the business of producing young talent (mostly at Ajax with some discussion of Fulham, DC United, and the US developmental program as well).  If you have a solid 30 minutes to read, this is really worthwhile.  It doesn't really come to any conclusion, per se, just a great overview of how both the clubs and kids see their time training for a career at the top level of soccer.

Bummer about Drogs and Rio being out for the tournament.

Cheers - Neal

Rio handed four-game ban

Easy come, easy go.
Rio Ferdinand has been handed a four-match suspension after being found guilty of violent conduct by the Football Association.

The Reds' defender was involved in an off-the-ball incident during United's 4-0 victory over Hull City and will now miss the next four matches against Arsenal, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Everton.
However, Vidic was on the bench against Manchester City, so likely he'll step into the starting eleven at the Emirates.

Early Doors

Arshavin with some of the taller members of Arsenal's first team

Arsenal's Arshavin out but Rosicky, Walcott on way back

Arsenal's Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin will miss their next three matches after aggravating a groin injury on World Cup duty this week, his club manager Arsene Wenger said on Thursday...

He will now miss Saturday's league game at Manchester City, next week's Champions League opener away to Standard Liege and the following weekend's league match at home to Wigan Athletic.

"As for Tomas, he played 54 minutes in good shape. Of course, we have to be cautious. But the good news is he's back and he played. I don't know if he'll be in the squad for Saturday."

There was also encouraging news regarding winger Walcott with Wenger confirming the back problem that had sidelined him this season for Arsenal and England had healed and he could be back to face Standard Liege next week.

Spurs hopeful over Bassong

Tottenham are hopeful of centre-back Sebastien Bassong being fit of the Barclays Premier League clash against Manchester United on Saturday despite missing Cameroon's midweek clash against Gabon.

The 23-year-old picked up a slight knock to one of his knees against the same opponents last weekend and missed the return clash on Wednesday night, although Paul Le Guen's decision to leave him out of the squad was thought to be down to selection rather than injury.

Ferdinand could return at Spurs

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand could return from injury in time for Saturday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

The England centre-back has been sidelined with a thigh injury since the Community Shield defeat to Chelsea in August but has stepped up his recovery in training all week.

United manager Alex Ferguson said: "Rio has been in training this week and has got a chance for Saturday, I'm not sure how big a chance but he has got a chance.

Carson in line for debut

Third-choice goalkeeper Trevor Carson is on standby to make his Sunderland debut when Hull visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Craig Gordon is unlikely to face the Tigers having been ruled out of Scotland`s World Cup qualifier against Holland with a thigh strain while Marton Fulop is battling a long-standing heel injury.

Lee Cattermole missed out on England Under-21s encounter with Greece in midweek while striker Kenwyne Jones will be monitored having been away with Trinidad & Tobago.
Blues duo feature in practice match

Chelsea duo Joe Cole and Paulo Ferreira continued their return from injury in a 1-1 draw with Fulham in a practice match on Tuesday.

The pair are both in the process of recovering from serious knee injuries and it was the first time they had faced outside opposition since they were sidelined.

and related...

Davies boost for Fulham

Fulham midfielder Simon Davies continued his comeback from injury by taking part in friendly draw against Chelsea.

The Wales international has been out since before the end of last season after having surgery on a stress fracture of the foot, but he started a practice game at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Tuesday.

Injuries and Suspensions

One in, one out.

Not much new news this morning, the latest being the casualties from yesterday's Europa League matches.  Those claimed Andy Johnson and will force Jack Rodwell and Steven Pienaar into the dreaded "late fitness test".

Spurs have lost Gomes for a while and so Cudicini will sit behind their make-shift back line.  Presumably King will be back to partner Bassong with Corluka moving to right back and Hutton dropping to the bench.

Rio will be out for a month, but Manchester United have Vidic back.  That should solidify the back-line though presumably Brown and O'Shea will be the candidates for center and right back.

Ilunga is a doubt for West Ham meaning a likely start for Spector.  N'Zogbia is a doubt for Wigan.  Sunderland have questions over Lee Cattermole, Steed Malbranque and Martin Fulop.  The latter is interesting if it gives Gordon a chance to claim the number one jersey.  Doesn't sound likely, however.

Manchester City have some mixed fitness news after their 1-0 win over Barca midweek.  Adebayor, Robinho, and Bridge are slight doubts but Tevez looks good to start against Wolves.  Wolves themselves are missing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, but could have Berra and Doyle back if only from the bench.

Finally, Birmingham's Cameron Jerome turned his ankle.  This may give Christian Benitez his first start, but I'm not sold on that as his play has been so limited in games and warm-ups.  That being said, he's an interesting pick at home to Stoke for 6.04.
