Season Preview: Wolves

Overall Outlook - One of the teams that I saw live and in person last season and I have to say I went from being a little down on them to really appreciating the effort and commitment that they got from limited talent last season.  There were some numbers (Fletcher, Mouyokolo, van Damme) as well as some proven quality added over the Summer in an attempt to consolidate their place in the Prem.  The quality comes in the form of Stephen Hunt arriving from Hull to reunite with Kevin Doyle and Marcus Hahnemann to see if they can recreate the Reading-in-2006/2007 magic that shocked the Premier League with an 8th place finish.  The big question is whether the talent exists on the current Wolves roster to fill the roles that players like Dave Kitson, Sidwell, etc. filled on that Reading squad to push them towards the top half.  I think that Wolves will indeed consolidate their place and survive.  That said, there is one thing worth mentioning at this point, I'm pretty sure those two exact players - Sidwell and Kitson - are extremely available if Mick wants to get Stevie Coppell's band back together.  In fact, I guess Coppell himself is pretty available at this point as well - perhaps a first team manager in waiting?  Just saying...

At least Wolves will have cover for Doyle. This doesn't bring them anything they don't have on the pitch already though. Maybe next season Milijas gets going and brings them the creativity they lacked in the first half of the season, and didn't even try for in the latter half. 7.5 million pounds though? It seems to me that they're paying almost as much for Doyle's understudy as they did for Doyle himself.

Early Doors

Benitez insists he will slowly nurse the club’s leading scorer this season back into action as he does not want him to suffer yet another injury setback.

The Reds boss revealed Torres will again be a substitute in the Europa League second-leg clash in Romania against Unirea Urziceni on Thursday night, but it is hoped he will be able to select him from the start in Sunday’s home Premier League game with Blackburn.

Benitez said: “We decided to put him in the squad (against City) because he was training well last Friday. Now he can carry on and progress. He will be ready soon.

“We have to be careful because it has been a long time. Now it is a question of one step at a time.”

He added: “You cannot push him too hard because you could lose the player and it is not necessary.

“We will see how he progresses and we will decide each day.”
As I wrote on Monday, I think Torres is one for next week, but it will be worth following the news to see if there is any stronger indication that he'll get a run out from the start against Rovers.

Meanwhile, in the West Midlands...
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is set to name unchanged line-up for a third successive game for Saturday’s latest survival collision at Bolton.

The Molineux chief, who has earned a reputation for regularly changing his team this season in a bid to find a winning formula, has Michael Mancienne available again after ineligibility prevented him facing his parent club Chelsea last weekend.

But he was so impressed with the players’ application in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat that he hinted at retaining faith with the same XI at the Reebok that fell harshly to the Premier League leaders 2-0 and beat Tottenham 1-0...

And he revealed his satisfaction at the way Kevin Foley – described by critics as a square peg in a round hole – has adapted to his new role at wide right in the absence of the injured Michael Kightly, Dave Edwards and Andy Keogh...

“People tell me Kevin Foley is a full-back but he’s played really well for us in that position.

“He keeps the ball and but for a world class save he would have scored the equaliser against Chelsea.

“He had a couple of chances at Birmingham as well.

“It’s definitely suiting us to play the way we’re playing.

The Kevins, Doyle and Foley, are definitely on my radar for this weekend's match.

And in news that will interest Gareth Bale owners, especially those of you who have been enjoying his services at 2...
Assou-Ekotto could be available for this weekend's clash with Everton, but he concedes that he cannot expect to walk back into the team.

Premier League Transfer Round-up for Tuesday

Antonio Valencia Wigan Athletic 2008/09

Today we see the culmination of several seemingly inevitable deals.

Man Utd sign Wigan winger Valencia
This has been rumoured for months, if not years, and Cristian Ronaldo's departure only made it more likely.  Certainly not a galactico, but Valencia is a proven Premier League player.  He's also a true right winger which is something ManU hasn't had for the length of CRon's conversion into a center forward.  He'll stretch the field, put in crosses, and has the potential to make everyone around him better.

It will be interesting to see how Wigan replaces him.  They've already signed Jordi Gomez but he's a central/left-sided player and not a like for like replacement.  In fact, Wigan are overloaded on the left with Koumas, Kapo and N'Zogbia as attacking flank players for that side.  Maybe Daniel de Ridder will prove himself at this level if given a run of games on the right.  However, he's been notable for not being notable at all in the Premier League so far.  Wigan will be linked with a lot of players such as Jermaine Pennant (available on a free), and David Bentley.  I'll suggest they look to Newcastle United's Jonás Gutiérrez.  He should be available and would give them all the running they could want on that side and no little invention as well.

Burnley land Fletcher
Burnley complete Mears deal
Burnley start building their squad for the next level, and are hoping that these two fit the bill.  However, Mears certainly hasn't proven himself yet and players who starred in Scotland but couldn't make the grade in England are a dime a dozen.  Mears was at least cheap at 1/2 million.  Compared to Glen Johnson's 17million price tag and you think if Burnley get a servicable 30 games from him they'll have found a bargain.

Wolves snap up record signing Doyle
Meanwhile Wolves continues their own rebuilding effort.  Again they've chosen to pick over the bones of Championship rivals Reading and now Doyle joins goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann back in the Premier League.  I think it's a good signing.  Doyle had a great rookie season in the Premier League and like the rest of the team, a lousy sophmore season.  But experience counts, good and bad.

Blackburn sign N'Zonzi
The next, next, next Patrick Viera.  He's only 20, so perhaps one for the future.  But at 6'2", he's a typical Big Sam signing.

The question becomes, if Big Sam continues to make over Blackburn in a Bolton mold, will fantasy manager be advised never to bet on or against them?
