Sunderland striker Fraizer ruled out for season | Mail Online
I generally don't have many positive things to say about Yahoo's attempted forays into social media (mostly via the Yahoo Mail platform) but today we see one of the few benefits of it. Jeremy and I are connected via that platform and I saw that he had "bookmarked" this article about Frazier Campbell's injury (he's out for the season with a ligament tear) but due to a vacation with his family he didn't have any time for a blog post. So, I'm here to help fill in the blanks and do a little analysis on this injury.
First, it's a bit of a bummer to lose Campbell as a cheap option when you needed an enabling striker for at or around 5.00. That said, his time as a starter was likely drawing to a close regardless of his injury. With Asamoah Gyan arriving for a big wad of cash and Danny Welbeck also pressing for playing time (if you want SAF to continue to loan you some of his good young players you'd better play them while you have them) you have to expect that Campbell wasn't going to be a sure-fire starter for long. The question that I raised in my transfer deadline analysis still stands though, "are DBent and Gyan too similar to thrive on the same team?" We know Harry Redknapp would answer "yes" given his well-known love of the big/small strike partnership but who knows. Maybe two 5'11" strikers who can make intelligent runs can learn to work together and make life hell for defensive pairings used to being able to count on one of their opponents being something of a lumbering target player. If one of Gyan or DBent can regularly count on being matched with the slow defender generally counted on to negate the aerial game then that could be an advantage. What Sunderland's new attacking line-up definitely means is that Danny Welbeck is unlikely to be more than a role player getting most of his minutes off the bench and in situations where DBent and/or Gyan are injured/suspended.

ReplyDeleteWith Ledders playing mostly CL footy, That basically leaves Gallas playing ALOT of minutes partenered with Kaboul would be my guess. (Assuming Daws is done for the year)
Doesn't that Gallas signing look THAT much better now...
anyone see any stories that say why wenger did not sign a goalie. it was his #1 priority. i am just curious, if all of the teams, jacked up their prices or what. i hope he is not thinking that the current form of almunia is a reason to not buy.

ReplyDeleteIt took me 2 days to figure out that you meant sneijder, I thought you were talking about bernd Schneider, the ex german international. I think vdv would be better off at ManU, they really need a playmaker, and even more when scholes and giggs are gone. He's gonna find it hard to get in the first team with modric, huddlestone, kranjcar, bale, lennon, palacios all playing in midfield.
how long does a defender need to be on the pitch to get CS points thei year? Evans played 73 minutes but no CS against West Ham?
