And I thought SAF was the Michael Corleone of Summer 2007

Apparently the guys at Bayern Munich realized just how much money ManYoo had given them for Owen Hargreaves and decided to start spending it like there was no tomorrow. As OH (as in "Oh, is Hargreaves really worth THAT much?") walks out the door, in walk Frank Ribery, Luca Toni, and (according to the player himself) Miraslov Klose. Given what we know about the needs at Old Trafford wouldn't you rather have had the three guys that Bayern got with ManYoo's money than the one guy ManYoo actually got? Especially when the guy ManYoo got will be competing with another guy they overpaid for last year for a spot in central midfield?

Maybe I'm too dumb to see how it would work but I don't see Carrick/Hargreaves working any better at ManYoo than Gerrard/Lampard does for England. They're just too similar. Unless SAF is committed to a 5-man midfield with two of Ronaldo/Giggs/Nani wide and Hargreaves/Carrick/Anderson in the middle then I just don't see it.

If it were me, I'd rather go with a midfield of Carrick/Anderson/Nani/Ronaldo (with Ribery for depth) and Rooney/Klose/Toni as the strikeforce than any of the options in the previous paragraph. Just something for the people in Tampa to ponder as they evaluate what their expenditures have yielded this summer.

  1. you would think they might also want to shore up the back line, considering how thin it got late in the season and the quality of fill-ins was not stellar.

I agree completely - those 3 players (or really just any 1 of them) would seem to make more sense for ManU than Owen Hargreaves.

But my question is just how did Bayern entice Ribery & Klose to join - both are leaving teams that qualified for the Champions League for a team that did not!?? I guess they threw buckets of money at them...

Not quite true that the OH cash has paid for these 3 replacements, didn't OH cost ManU £17m? That's the same amount as Ribery has cost Munich. I am baffled tho as to why OH was purchased when its a plain as the red nose on SAF's face that he bought Carrick to fill that role for megabucks only last season when he couldnt get hold of OH!

And its just struck me on an almost completely unrelated note other than it concerns ManU, real shame Ben Foster is out injured, a potential BFBF there, shame he's not of M. Viduka's stature, or triple BF would have been in the bag :)

Guys are we all blind? i mean, look at the AC Milan semi final 2nd leg and the FA cup final we lacked quality on the bench coupled with fatigue that's what killed our game if we had a holding midfielder like Hargreaves, the game would have been different. We have only 1 good holding midfielder-Carrick to be precise now giving him a fight for his place is very nice plus this season, we need at least two quality players for each position if we want to retain the title and win the champions league
