Why not me?
So, what to make of the mid-week results? Is Chelsea stumbling? They certainly seem to be keeping things together with smoke and mirrors at this point. Have ManYoo righted the ship? Their blow-out win over West Ham was impressive but did it signify anything or was it just a case of superior talent combined with better effort on a single day? Can Arsenal beat their new Bolton (Stoke) this weekend to ensure that they keep their momentum going in the right direction? What the hell should we make of the "next four" - Citeh, Liverpool, Spurs, and Villa? Can any of them put together a sustained period of excellence? And finally, did Everton wait too long to put it all together? Throw in the battle for the final two relegation spots (Pompey are goners) and these are the story lines that will make up the rest of the season.
Three of those story lines will also play a critical role in determining the outcome of this weekend's matches.
With Chelsea hosting Citeh, Spurs hosting Everton and Arsenal traveling to Stoke we will see the above story lines play out before us. Your choices for this weekend - especially with ManYoo and Villa not playing in the league (along with Hull and WHU) will come down to what you believe about those story lines. What do I mean?
Everton have undoubtedly been the best team of the second half of the season with a draw against Arsenal and wins against ManYoo and Chelsea. Spurs hold the fourth position in the table. What to make of this match? Will this be the signature win that Spurs needs to get back to the good times of earlier in the season and begin to consolidate their place in the standings? Or will Everton continue to accumulate the scalps of teams above them in the table? If you believe that Spurs will defend the Lane then there is every reason to bet on guys like Defoe or Modric. However if you believe in the Everton revival then you have to treat Spurs premium players the same for this match as you would for a match with Chelsea or ManYoo - probably not worth the price. (For what its worth, my intuition tells me that Everton is the better team and their "story line" will win out over that of Spurs even at WHL).
I'm even more perplexed by all of the possibilities of Chelsea/Citeh. We all know that the talent is there for Citeh to beat anyone but does the team have the will and the cohesion to put it all together against a Chelsea team that is showing that there is weakness at the back to be exploited? Honestly, there's no scenario that you can take off the table for this one - I wouldn't be shocked if the result was a 5-4 shootout, a 4-1 blowout in either direction, or a nil-nil snooze-fest on the order of the recent Liverpool/Citeh match. Again, it comes down to what you believe will happen when two increasingly difficult-to-figure teams get together in a match that means a great deal to both sides.
Finally, Stoke have emerged as Arsenal's new bogey team (which was the popular phrase applied to Bolton until as recently as a year ago). They play uncompromising, tough, and occasionally dirty football and have a squad of 6'+ players who are a difficult match-up for Arsenal's might-mites. Combine their recent failings against Stoke with their recent tendency to surrender horrifically bad early goals and you have the recipe for a bad fantasy day for the Gunners. If you believe the obvious script that the entire media will trot out is what will play out, then you want to stay away from yet another set of high-profile fantasy players (Cesc, Bendtner, Almunia, etc.).
The question becomes, with all of this uncertainty and ManYoo and Villa certainly NOT playing - how do you select a team? Do you have the balls to select AGAINST the top teams in the league? Would you go with the form teams and pick from Everton and Stoke AGAINST the 3rd and 4th place teams? Do you load up on inconsistent Liverpool who SHOULD look extremely attractive against Rovers at home? Do you try to make something of Burnley at home against Pompey? How about fading Birmingham against unpredictable Wigan?
Well, here's my take:
Forwards
- Torres - obviously a lot of this pick depends on whether the news comes down that he's starting but if he does (and he should after two straight substitute appearances) I think he'll remind Reds fans what they've been missing.
- Bendtner - his price went up with a goal last weekend but I'm betting on him to continue his form in an effort to give Wenger just enough reason to believe that he doesn't need to buy another striker in the Summer even though everyone else on the planet knows he needs to.
- Drogba - he's Drogba.
K2 - Chelsea's defense has been pretty rotten recently to the point that even Wolves looked dangerous if you watched the match.K2's red card in yesterday's FA Cup match makes this irrelevant.- Jerome - it's hard for me to make much sense of how the Brum first XI is selected from week-to-week but Jerome seems to have been starting recently. My only hesitation is that Birmingham haven't been very good in that time so while the match-up looks good the player doesn't so consider this only a lukewarm recommendation in a week where there don't seem to be a lot of great options.
- Doyle - The opposite of Jerome - the player is good but betting on Wolves on the road, even against Bolton is hard to do. Another lukewarm recommendation but definitely worth considering.
- Klasnic - Playing Wolves at home is usually good for anyone's chances so if he's healthy, he's worth a long look.
Jeremy here, picking up for Neal. Let's continue:
Midfielders
- Cesc "Fab4" Fabregas - maybe not the best matchup of the weekend, but he's got to be involved if Arsenal are to succeed. And with that upcoming schedule... if you have him below cost, you keep him.
- Gerrard - It's been a while since we looked his way, but home against Rovers it's now or never.
- Eagles; O'Hara; Lee; Jarvis - Middies around 10 who have good match-ups (against each other) but are on lousy teams themselves. There have to be points in here somewhere.
- Adam Johnson - Lousy match-up, but he's still relatively cheap and should get points regardless. 10 from the dire Liverpool match, case in point. Pun not intended.
- Simon Davies - back from injury and joining Duff in the attack and the set piece duties. Normally we wouldn't recommend anyone from Fulham on the road, especially with Fulham having a midweek Europa League outing, but with Sunderland struggling there may be something in this for the Whites.
- Maxi RodrÃguez - Benitez's new darling. A cheap starter with some potential.
- Mikel Arteta - cheapest we've ever seen him, but is he Everton's hub right now?
Defenders
- Ferreira - Not the cheapest or surest option, but if Zhirkov isn't back for the weekend, he'll start on the left against a, let's face it, struggling Citeh side.
- Craig Gardner - discussed elsewhere.
- Alan Hutton - a good bet for the money and at home against "Fulham on the road, especially with Fulham having a midweek Europa League outing".
- Kevin Foley - also discussed previously but it bears repeating. He's listed as a defender but playing at right wing and gets Bolton who have all of three clean sheets all season.
- Skrtel - as Neal mentioned above, Skrtel is the best bet amongst Liverpool's defenders
- Cork; Fox; Alexander - Burnley defenders who operate in midfield or have been coming into the attack. Cork and Fox are new in the system and GAlex is slated to return from injury. Home to Pompey.
Goalkeeper
- Hilario - He's in line to replace Cech who went out of last night's CL match with a calf injury. A top four keeper for under 7 is gold. However we've seen Hilario ship as many goals as keep clean sheets.
- Reina - not bad value for 10.86. Rovers is just the first in a good run of matches where Liverpool can expect to keep on keeping out goals.
- James - 1.24. An enabler par exellence. Although you'll likely get what you pay for.
- Jensen - the other side of that matchup with Pompey. Better bet, but more expensive.
- Howard - maybe one for the barn door, but Everton's upcoming schedule looks really easy and he's slipped to under 8 after a tough run of fixtures (Liv, Che, ManU).
NO.1
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no! It's "First!"
ReplyDelete*Sigh*
LOL!
ReplyDeleteOpinions on holding Vandersar for a 4+ discount with no game?
Jeremy, LOL hahahaha !
ReplyDeleteAdam Johnson is a good player even playing against Chelsea. I hope Bale will keep his place and yeah i have Jack Cork too. Keep an eye to Roman Pav too, his on fire !
I need a small help here ;-D
Jack Cork/Richardson or Hutton/Benayoun ??
Is Sidibe likely to start for Stoke? I have him at 4.79 and he only needs a shot on target to justify that which i think he'll get.
ReplyDeletebbc said pompey are going to administration on friday. should re-consider having pompey and burnley players??
ReplyDeletehmmmmm Cech is confirmed to be out for a month
ReplyDeletehttp://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=747042&sec=england&cc=5901
I checked the schedule for W24 and W25...
even Hilario is a good pick up for W24 @ 6.17m and should be starting in Cech's absense, I dont wanna drop Almunia @ 8.51m especially with Arsenal's matchups coming up after W24
and also if im reading it right, it looks like Chelsea does not have a match to play for W25 with a FA cup match vs Stoke on Sunday March 7th.
(if chelsea doesnt have a game on W25, i m still gonna keep Drog @10.xx!!!)
another note is: Torres did not feature in the Europa league, he stayed on the bench since Liverool secured the 3-1 win, benitez could keep him fresh for the Rovers game. I would think he def. getting a start against Blackburn.
<<>>
they did not have a single shot in the first half
oops, i meant Everton did not have a single shot in the first half of the Europa League match vs Sporting Lisbon
ReplyDelete@Lamin: The terminology can be confusing for those of us not living in the UK, but here's my stab at it:
ReplyDeleteBy going into administration (bankruptcy protection), Pompey will be assessed a 9-point deduction, which will essentially guarantee relegation. Otherwise, business as usual on the pitch. By going into administration, Pompey avoids being "wound up" (i.e., being liquidated to pay off the creditors and thus ceasing to exist). It's the best of a bad set of options. Pompey'll drop a division (maybe two before it's all over -- see Leeds Utd) but will live to fight another day.

Usually I don't post my team, but this week I am in a quandry, so I'd appreciate any feedback people could give me.
ReplyDeleteAlmunia
Verm, Hutton, Silvestre
Fab, Lee, AJohnson, Modric
Drogba, Bendtner, Nugent
I'm thinking Maxi or a Burnley defender or Hilario, but I would welcome comments.
Bob G.
I picked up D Bent last week thinking he is due a goal. Thoughts? Any alternatives for 12.5?
ReplyDeleteYou've only recommended 2 players that I have (Drogba and Gerrard). Gambling as I am playing catch up after slacking for a couple of months. Hope I don't fall further behind.
Round da Rowndabout
@Round da Rowndabout, I'm considering Kuyt for 11.98. Otherwise, see above for our striker recommendations.
ReplyDeleteSkrtel's out; with Kyrgiakos injured Kelly's a good outside bet.
ReplyDeleteRate my team...please:
ReplyDeleteHilario
Verm,Bale,INSUA,Fox
Eagles,Gerrard,Lee
Rooney(@16,22),Bendtner,Fletcher
Any thoughts...??? 1-10???
Hi Jeremy / Neal,
ReplyDeleteGreat posting, keep it up.
I have more or less followed your team.
Stevie G, Fabregas, Drogba and Torres.
I have selected Jussi in goal, Bale @ 2.65, Verm @ 8.5 and carr.
Two fillers, Diao (Stoke @ 1.05), hope he gets one shot at target or one foul, that should do it and Henry (Wolves) filler.
SL
@Harpoon - "LIVERPOOL: Skrtel is stretchered off and replaced by Sotirios Kyrgiakos."
ReplyDeleteDon't think Kyrgiakos is injured...
wow. With Torres price dropping I was now JUST able to sneak him in my lineup with 0.02 units left.
- Bale/BAE situation. BAE played on the right back spot against Bolton. His first 3 crosses were well long. he did not look great out there (maybe playing his weak side) but Bale has looked DEADLY patrolling that left flank. Don't see him losing that spot unless an injury (knock on wood)
- my current team:
Given
Verm/Bale/Hutton
Arteta/Zhirkov/Cesc/Gerrard
Drogs/Bendtner/Torres
Might change Zhirkov_->Maxi depending on injury.
- Quick peek at BarnDoor: Sunderland/Burnley/Bolton have double games and Fulham/Chelsea/Blackburn sit idle. take into consideration.
Kyrgiakos is still suspended from his straight red against Everton. No idea if Degen is fit or if Kelly will step in, but I'm not willing to take the risk.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a tough week to pick players, but I'm satisfied with who I have. Hopefully some gambles will pay off.
As of right now:
Reina
Bale/Fox/Hutton
Johnson/Lee/Gerrard/Fabregas/Arteta
Klasnic/Bendtner
Any suggestions for another player aside from Arteta under 7.6? Thought about Yossi, Nugent, Carr, and Elm, but none seemed guaranteed starters except Carr and I have no clue what to make of Brum or Wigan lately.
Thoughts? Good luck all!
My current team:
ReplyDeleteD.James
P.Robinson,Hutton,Hreidarsson
Gerrad,S.Larsson,C.Eagles,Arteta
Rooney(@16.05),Torres,Kevin Davies
I'm thinking S.Larsson to Lee.
Any thoughts????
Er.... why no MTay or Tevez...?
ReplyDeletejenson
hutton, bale verm
mtay, modric, eagles, ajohnson
drogs,tevez, kalinic
Need help!!
ReplyDeleteOption1:
Jensen
GBale,Hutton,RJohnson
CEagles,Gerrard,Maxi,KFahey
Rooney(@16.37),drogba(@20.74),Bendtner
or
Option2
Jensen
Bale,RJohnson,SCarr
Gerrard,CEagles,Duff,Lee
Kuyt,McFadden,Bendtner
Which option better?
Thanks in advance!!
MJ
@ Owen_Williams
ReplyDeleteSunderland has only one game because their opponent (Aston Villa) is still in the FA Cup. So the weekend's fixture is postponed.
my almost final team:
ReplyDeletejensen
fox/cork/hutton
eagles/lee/a.johnson/o'hara
drog/bendtner/torres
still looking at midfielders below 8
walcott @ 7.19
arteta @ 7.56
davies @ 7.78
benayoun @ 7.74
meaning o'hara has to go and upgrade hutton to foley @ 7.60
pls comment...
At the moment:
ReplyDeleteHilario / Given (v cheap)
Bale, Hutton, Skrtl (to be changed)
Gerrard, Arteta, Bowyer, A.Johnson
Sidibe (4.79), Drogs, Fletcher
Any thoughts?
no love for saha or bent jeremy?
ReplyDeleteSaha is on the road having played in Europe yesterday. DBent (and Sunderland) haven't done anything of note since December. So, no love.
ReplyDeleteI am going to gamble on Defoe @price.
ReplyDeleteEvdS (save the 4m, pick Roo back up Sat),
Bale/Verm/Shorey
Modric/Johnson/O'Hara/Gerrard
Torres/Bendtner/Defoe.
Things looking up for Everton?
ReplyDeleteTottenham squad and staff hit by sickness bug: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/8538594.stm
I'm really struggling to pick a team this week...guess I just cross my fingers and hope!
Malrog
Anyone any thoughts on Maxi + Fabregas vs Kuyt + Eagles? im not particularly sold on either to be honest, and I dont like selling Fabregas at a discount (albeit a slight discount ~1)...
ReplyDelete@joshtottenham
ReplyDeleteI went for Maxi & Eagles, because I can't afford Fab4! I'm hoping Fab4 has an anonymous game and drops in price, so I can pick him up next week for the start of Arsenal's run of easy games. However, that may not happen, so might be best to hold onto him.
As for me, I've got
Almunia@8.63
Verm/Bale/Fox
Maxi/S.Davies/Eagles/Wade Elliott(last man in)
Rooney@16.05/Drogs/Bendtner
You can see I'm leaning heavily towards Burnley, hoping that Portsmouth can make them better than they really are! No way I'm selling Rooney at >6 discount.
Not entirely happy with it (will Bendtner do anything against Stoke?) - but I've spent long enough tinkering, and will just have to leave it as it is!
Good luck all
Malrog
Any updated I&S news today? I've been looking but am finding conflicting reports (including the possibility of Crouch AND Defoe being out?). Thanks

ReplyDeleteSpurs official website:
http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/team-news-260210.html
In summary, Harry is not sure on Defoe (tight hamstring) and Crouch (foot injury), to monitor fitness with training Friday and Saturday morning.
That was yesterday's news, look out for updates though...
